ROAD TO SUCCESS COACHING MY JOURNEY

ROAD TO SUCCESS COACHING MY JOURNEY

My personal Road to Success

I’m sitting here in my office on a Monday morning in November, listening to Bryan Adams… After days of thought on what you’d like to know about me and why I’ve decided to write about my journey through life, I’m asking myself: Where do I start? My career in automotive? My time supporting my husband and children throughout his military career? The impact and effects of change, and how I’ve dealt with them? Starting out in the public sector? Becoming a qualified swimming teacher at the age of 14…yes! Let’s start there.

A passion for teaching  at the tender age of 14

When I was 14, I had the choice of going into competitive swimming or training as a swimming teacher. My response was “Everyone needs to learn to swim.” This marked the beginning of a lifelong passion for creating positive experiences for others and helping them succeed (despite the challenges I faced around training to teach at such a young age!).

Fast forward to a new life… and a new identity

After starting my career in public housing, my life was turned upside down a few years later when I joined my new husband, Scott, at his military base in Germany. Being a forces wife taught me some valuable lessons, not least the drive to retain my personal identity. I was Annette Clay, not just the last three numbers of Scott Clay’s military number!

Annette ‘the lioness

As our three children arrived, another chapter of my life – and another learning experience – began. My kids taught me everything I’ll ever need to know about organisation, time management, team leadership (the lioness in me!) and being a great listener. As any Mum will tell you, there’s no better feeling than seeing your child have a ‘light bulb’ learning moment or grow a little taller in themselves. Those moments are priceless.

Hi ho, hi ho…

After years of endless house moves, we returned to our home town of Mansfield Woodhouse. I was back at work by this time and soon found a new job which heralded the start of my 20 year career in the automotive industry. Balancing long working hours with home life was tough, but I loved the fast pace and supportive, client-driven environment. My hard work paid off and, in 2005, I was promoted to the sales team.

A make or break moment

For the first time in my life, I felt completely out of my depth. I’d moved from a world of solid client relationships to managing a mostly dormant portfolio. It was a genuine make or break moment. But giving up was never an option for me. I got stuck in and found myself rebuilding an 82%-of-target portfolio to 116% by 2010. It’s true that the hardest things you achieve give you the greatest rewards and I discovered this during that time.

Life never stands still

Over the next 7 years, I took on more new challenges at work and embarked on other adventures at home as we moved into South Carr Farm, a 32 acre property complete with 20 horses at livery! Life just couldn’t get any better: I worked for a company I believed in and lived in a beautiful place I called home. However, things changed in 2017 when a negative experience led me to take time out. After receiving counselling, and with the support of friends and family, I returned to the automotive business two years later.

My own light bulb moment

Whilst I enjoyed my new job and shared the company’s customer-focused ethos, something inside me had changed. I found myself thinking more and more about what makes people successful and how I could support them to find their true potential. I’d always been a mentor in terms of giving guidance where needed, but these thoughts were taking me to another level – and Road to Success Coaching was born!

The only constant is change…

Throughout my journey I’ve endured many changes, both positive and negative. Reflecting on this has played a big part of building who I am today. I’ve welcomed positive changes with open arms and learned to deal with the impact of those out of my control, including losing my parents to illnesses in 2016 and 2021. Throughout both those times, I felt the depth of hopelessness like I never thought I would – but I found strength I never thought I had, too.

The things that have stayed consistent throughout my journey are my desire to make a difference and my love of supporting people like you. So, if any aspect of my story strikes a chord with you, please get in touch.
